Exactly! He didn't deserve to die defenseless! He was a strong, capable and very intelligent character!
But yes, it was really sad. Especially the character's build-up, which is an inevitable trainwreck :'<

Of course he'd fall in love with Lily!
He was the one bright light in all his life! She saw the goodness in him (quotes Lupin), i mean, he was only ever happy when he was a child! He dreamed of going to Hogwarts to start anew and leave behind his pathetic state of living in Spinner's End (and away from his muggle bastard of a father) only to be bullied four to one and make all the bad choices (who could resist Tom Riddle in all his fifth year sexy glory? Especially when he had a nose then). At least of all the characters, he repented, went back to Albus Dumbledore and even gave up his life to make up for his misgivings & mistakes and win the war for the good side! If it wasn't for him & Albus, Harry'd be dead by the first book!!

I'm sorry I went into detail, it's just.. bloody hell. Can't stop the tears from falling.

He probably had to die no matter what, because without, there would be a big plot hole. The story Hermione tells about Death and 3 men, Snape is one of them, Dumbledore is death, Voldemort and Harry are the two other men in the story. Harry also had to die, but Snape could even possibly have given Harry the stone, even if the movie shows something else, but I don't remember, haven't seen the last movies for years now.

Even in an alternate universe, in The Cursed Child, Snape still stayed true to his loyalties and was willing to die again in order to save Al and Scorpius' world, because he saw a world where Voldemort didn't win and died again for that cause. And he still loved Lily then, which ends the discussion of whether what he had for her was a crush, or lust, or something much deeper and real. And that made him human, because while he had his quirks, he also had his perks. I like how he's a man of extremes :>

And before that, Snape drank a Blood Replenishing potion and a tiny vial of a potion for anti-venom that was contained within a fake tooth at the back (cos we know he's smart and that he may have known Nagini may be his means of death cos he hangs a lot around the Dark Lord)
